cortijo "La Cubertilla"

casa rural

After a long search, it led us to this perfect place in Andalusia. We Ron and William dreamed for years of a place where one could relax, have a home feeling, enjoy the scenery and recharge the battery. Somewhere where you can close completely, but are near other interesting places. And certainly not unimportant, it had to be warm, characteristic and atmospheric. That long wait was rewarded, because after years of searching we found an old cortijo with a large courtyard, whitewashed walls, beautiful authentic elements and that in a quiet, rural environment.

Inside the cortijo you can taste the typical Spanish atmosphere everywhere. The cortijo consists of 2x a 2-person apartment and a house for a maximum of 8 people. Furthermore, there is of course our own house. The Spanish atmosphere that you can taste outside is extended on the inside. Beautiful antique furniture and Spanish tiles.

Fuente Tojar and surroundings

Fuente-Tójar.jpg

Fuente Tójar, Spain – Andalusia, home of La Cubertilla

Fuente Tójar may not be the place you first think of when you go on holiday in Andalusia, but due to its favorable location, close to the nature reserve la subbética and between the important cities, it is certainly a place from which you can go in all directions . It offers few amenities but there are two small supermarkets, a museum, a public swimming pool, several murals, three bars where you can eat and an ATM. In the summer there is also a bar/restaurant by the public swimming pool. Fuente Tójar is closest to the town of Priego de Córdoba, a baroque jewel, a town with many amenities for the region. Priego de Córdoba can be reached in less than 15 minutes from Fuente Tójar.

IMG-20200212-WA0007.jpg

Priego de Córdoba

The capital of the Subbética region, it offers a fantastic location on a plateau overlooking the Subbética mountain range. Although Priego's history dates back more than 8,000 years, the city rose to prominence in the eighteenth century, when the wealth of the silk and textile industry financed the construction or remodeling of the baroque churches and buildings for which it is famous. Most of Priego's monuments are within walking distance of the old town, built on the edge of the plateau around the 13th century Moorish castle.

In Priego de Córdoba you have a beautiful historic district, Barrio de la Villa, and a baroque fountain Fuente del Rey.

The Barrio de la Villa district dates back to the time when the Moors lived here. It is the old center of Priego de Córdoba. Barrio de la Villa is partly walled and mainly consists of winding streets with whitewashed houses. This place is romance at its best! As a visitor, a walk through this originally Arab neighborhood is a journey of discovery of beautiful places. As far as we are concerned, the highlight is Balcón del Adarve. This arched street is located on the northeast side of the village. The height of 55 meters has created an unobstructed panoramic view of the surroundings of Priego de Córdoba.

Via the beautiful street Calle del Rio you can walk to the Fuente de la Salud and the Fuente del Rey. Along the way you will see a number of beautiful and sometimes stately Andalusian buildings. The two fountains date from the sixteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place where they are located is seen as one of the most beautiful places in Priego de Córdoba, especially because of the imposing Fuente del Rey. Some tourists even drive to Priego especially because of the fountains.

Jaén

Jaén is the capital of the province of the same name, in the Andalusia region, at an altitude of 573 m south of the river, the Guadalquivir. The town is located in the most important olive producing area in Spain. There is large-scale trade in and processing of olives. The city has declared itself the World Capital of Olive Oil, thanks to the large amount of olive groves in the province. The Provincial Museum is known for its archaeological finds and visual arts. There is also an ethnological museum. Numerous remains from the Moorish occupation period can still be seen in the city. There are parts of the old Moorish fortifications, a cistern and an old minaret at the church of Santa Magdalena (15th century), in mudéjar style, and baths from the 10th-11th century.
Jaen has, among other things, a very large cathedral and has spectacular natural parks and impressive cultural routes.

Subbetica.png

Discover the Subbética Cordobesa in the heart of Andalusia

The Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park is a nature reserve south of Córdoba, in the heart of Andalusia. It is a mountainous area with mountain ranges (for example the Sierra de Cabra with the highest point El Pichacho at 1217 meters), vast valleys, lakes, olive trees, almond trees, typical Mediterranean vegetation and many different animals. Surrounding the Sierras Subbéticas are the municipalities of Almedinilla, Benamejí, Cabra, Carcabuey, Doña Mencía, Encinas Reales, Fuente Tójar, Iznájar, Lucena, Luque, Palenciana, Priego de Córdoba, Rute and Zuheros. Together with the Natural Park, they form the tourist area “La Subbética Cordobesa”, the Subbética of Córdoba. An area rich in nature and culture. Here you can taste the real Andalusia with its relaxed lifestyle, delicious gastronomy, Moorish influences, etc.

Alcala la Real

The noble and loyal city of Alcalá la Real, as its title reads, is located in the south of the province of Jaén on the border with Cordoba and Granada, on a vast plain, dominated by the hill of La Mota, in the center of a mountainous area . The town extends at the foot of the famous castle of La Mota and its surrounding walls, which has been a national monument since 1931. A city with an Arab urban design, churches and architectural details, examples of the magnificence and rich historical past. Examples include the churches of Consolación, Santo Domingo, Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, San Juan Bautista, the Abbot's Palace, the Town Hall and the fountain of Pilar de los Álamos.
From the mirador (lookout) of San Juan Tadeo, in the Las Cruces district, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Alcala la Real and its castle.

Zuheros.jpg

Zuheros

One of the most beautiful white villages in Spain
The beautiful white village lies within the boundaries of the Parque Natural de Sierras Subbética. Zuheros is on the list of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, Los Pueblos mas Bonitos de España! In 2003 it was also declared a cultural heritage site. Zuheros is a small village with 900 inhabitants. It is beautifully situated on a slope with the 9th century palatial Moorish castle on top, which you can see from far and wide. Zuheros is one of those villages that has managed to keep the charm of another era through time. The narrow winding streets with whitewashed houses and yellow roofs run up the hill. The main agricultural activity of the village is olive growing. An olive oil cooperative is located on the edge of the village. The village is also known for its cheese factory Las Balanchares, with locally bred goats from the Sierras providing the milk for this internationally renowned product. Cheese can be purchased directly from the factory. You will also find stalactite caves that you can visit, the way there alone is worth it.

March 19 San Jose

This day was tradition in Fuente-Tójar, to eat with family and friends to the place called “La Zarzuela”, but since in 1974 the “Hermitage of San José” was built in the Cerro de la Mesa, this became the place to to celebrate this festival and to spend the day there, having a barbecue, visiting the saint and enjoying the views that this place offers us.

May 15 Feria Real de Ntro. Patron San Isidro Labrador

The Real Fair of Fuente-Tójar lasts four days, always including May 15 (Patron feast), and the rest of the days are variable, so that it always coincides with the weekend. During the fair we find a wide program of activities for all ages… cultural, musical, sports, etc… In this festival we find one of the most unique and ancient traditions of the province of Cordoba, the San Isidro dancers, numbering eight and dressed in printed skirts and colorful paper hats, dance on several occasions, to the accompaniment of guitars, castanets, tambourine and violin, before the image of San Isidro Labrador during the tour of the procession that takes place on May 15. This dance won the First National Prize of Ancient Dances in Madrid in the 1960s.

The 3rd weekend of June, Arts and crafts market

This market was set up by cortijo La Cubertilla i.c.w. a woman from the village. The mayor now wants to make it an annual event, because the 1st edition went very well. There is art, crafts, music etc. and this is all around the plaza de la Fuente in the village.

The 1st weekend of August, Fiesta de “La Cruz” de la Cubertilla.

This festival is celebrated the first weekend of August in a small scattered community. Visitors from different municipalities come here to the procession in honor of the Holy Cross, to enjoy the music of the orchestra. It is worth mentioning the race of the horses, a curious and striking activity that has been taking place for several years. This party is celebrated on the square at "La Cubertilla", so if you are a guest that weekend you can go there on foot, but you may also be bothered by the noise at night.

The 2nd weekend of August, Fiesta de “La Alcaparra”.

This unique festival is celebrated on the second weekend of August. This festival has been held since the late 1990s and came from the idea of friends, who made it a kind of tribute to all the emigrants who have been leaving Fuente-Tójar for years in search of work. This party was initially just a gathering of friends sharing a meal together. The neighbors were also involved, and so over the years it has gradually become one of the most visited festivals in the region. Years ago, the Cultural Gastronomic Association “Friends of the Caper” and its members, with the collaboration of the City Council, responsible for organizing such a party, created the peculiarity of preparing a meal for everyone on Saturday. The people who buy a ticket for a symbolic price get a mug and a plate. One can pick up the dish prepared that night and enjoy complimentary beer, sangria and soft drinks. Another unique part of this festival is the parade of “la borriquita del vino” that rides through the streets of the city, accompanied by a charanga that distributes trinkets and gifts to children.
